Arts Outreach: Artist as Citizen, Artist in the Community
Installation/Public Art
Intro to the BFA
Davies Forum, Artists for a Just World (w/Peter Novak and Roberto
Varea)
Director of Arts Outreach Program: Artist as Citizen in Contemporary
Society
In developing and directing this program I take as its premise that
of the notion of art as an agent for social, change and cultural transformation;
the metaphor is “one foot in the studio” and “one
foot in the street.” Through reflections on readings, discussions,
guest speakers, proposal writing, looking at films and videos of other
artists practicing community-based art, the student begins to understand
the role of art and the artist as a contributing and essential member
of the community. The student is then placed into community setting
to engage in community based art projects in collaboration with community
needs and/or issues, The Projects have taken a range of forms: i.e.,
murals, video presentations, collages, photography, graphic design,
artists books, ”zines”, performances, architectural models.
Students have worked with, among others:
. Prison Radio Project and Mumia Abu Jamal,
. Neighborhood Parks Council.
. Milestones Recovery Center
. Planned Parenthood
. Tenderloin Hospitality House
. Faithful Fools
. Habitat for Humanity
. AAA Road Rage
. Nor-Cal recycling Center; the SF “dump.”
. St. Anthony’s Immaculate Conception Elementary School
. ArtSpace, with Fr. River Sims and the homeless youth on Polk St.
in San Francisco
. SPCA
. Mission Cultural Center
. Food Not Bombs
. Project Open Hand
. International Action Center (IAC)
. Snowboarding and Breast Cancer Benefit
. Media representations.
. McDonalds Corporation.
The student may also identify a range of issues and identify the appropriate
agency or community partner to work with, such as:
. An anorexic/bulimic group
. Drug and alcohol use on a college campus
. Teen pregnancy
. Environmental issues
. Issues around Ddepression
. Issues around loneliness
Class, Introduction and Intermediate Drawing
In Intermediate Drawing I focused on figure drawing and the enormous
history of this throughout western art history. I ask the students
to “see” how the figure was drawn in the 15th c. and how
it is drawn in the 20th c. and how this reflects changing cultural
values. I ask them to draw the figure these different ways.
Class, Installation/Public Art
The student creates a project for a public space; an interactive experience,
a range of media from fixed and static to media driven to performance
and to understand how this “new form” emerged and why.
Students have created work at:
. Ocean Beach,
. Aquatic Park,
. USF campus,
. Golden Gate Park
…with the intention of intervening in, and understanding, the
use of public space.
